GM Daniel Fridman and Jan Gustaffson co-winners

(Internet Chess Club (ICC), 6th-14th March, 2004)
IM Michael Rahal (EDAMI, Barcelona)

For the fifth year running Internet Chess Club (www.chessclub.com) has held the annual Internet Chess Tournament “Ciudad de Dos Hermanas” (Spain). This event has consolidated as the most important Internet tournament in the world, both in number and strength of players. The final statistics are overwhelming:

Registrations: 2.921 players from 93 countries (1.627 playing at least one qualifier) including 74 GM, 5 WGM, 126 IM, 8 WIM, 82 FM y 1 WFM.

Twelve Swiss qualifiers were held, with around 350 players in each one. The best 32 best qualified to the KO finals, including 18 first order GM and 13 IM.

Application of Clause V, section a), third paragraph of the Tournament rules has resulted in the disqualification of some players, including the initial winner and runner-up.

The co-winners took 1.350 euros each.

Curiously the participant  "Phileas" played none less than 87 rounds (each qualifier had 9 rounds, so he participated in 9,5 qualifiers!!, nearly all the week playing chess).

Complete standings, game file, PGN game files and other interesting information can be found at the Dos Hermanas web site www.doshermanas.net
